Leading that effort is Chris Ralph, Grounds Manager at Plymouth Argyle, whose journey into grounds management started with a chance opportunity and has grown into a career spanning golf and professional football.

With six pitches to maintain, a dedicated team to lead, and thousands of fans arriving every matchday, Chris understands better than most what it takes to deliver surfaces capable of performing at the highest level.

We caught up with Chris to learn more about his career, favourite equipment, and life behind the scenes at one of the South West's biggest football clubs.

"Outside of work, spending time with my family is the main thing these days."

"Put the kettle on and switch Sky Sports News on."

A Career Built from Opportunity

Chris's journey into the industry started unexpectedly.

"A random apprenticeship opportunity came up at a golf course through a YTS scheme. I then moved to a small nine-hole golf course where I completed my Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications."

What began in greenkeeping eventually led him into football, where he combined his passion for sport with his expertise in turf management.

Life at Plymouth Argyle

No two days are ever the same, but preparation is everything.

"The first priority is making sure the first team has everything they need ready for 10am. Once that's sorted, we focus on preparing the stadium pitch, academy pitches, and any maintenance jobs around the stadium."

The role extends well beyond turf management.

"We help with anything required around the stadium, from seat repairs to supporting the maintenance manager when needed."

On matchdays, attention shifts entirely to the stadium surface.

"Matchdays are all about getting the pitch ready and making sure everything is prepared for supporter arrival. Once the final whistle goes, it's a clean-up cut, divoting, locking up, and job done."

Advice for the Next Generation

Chris is passionate about encouraging new people into the industry.

"The hours can be long and unsociable at times, but I find the job immensely rewarding. Standing there at 3pm on a Saturday with thousands of people watching a game on a surface you've produced, there's nothing better."

His advice?

"Get qualified, get your spraying certificates, and take every opportunity that comes your way. Once you've got your foot in the door and start gaining hands-on experience, this industry can take you anywhere in the world."

"Being Grounds Manager at Plymouth Argyle, the club I've followed and supported all my life, is something I'm incredibly proud of."
